I had somewhat of a revelation about this the other day. Everyone talks about woodstock with a sense of nostalgia nowadays. Those who were lucky enough to have been physically present for this remarkable time in history are considered gods among men to some. Its about having been part of “the movement”, so to speak. About being able to say “I was there.. I experienced that.” This realization hit me during one of the many conversations that I constantly seem to be having recently about my legal status. At first I was complaining talking about my particular situation; which, given the rapidly increasing number of people that are in a very similar situation isn’t exactly what you would call ‘unique’ and at the same time, there’s a huge number of people who could never relate to the incredible impact that something like this has on your life. Anyway, I came to the realization that I am currently part of a movement. As much as I hate the situation it’s put me in, I can say that I am living it. I am living proof of the horrible toll that not being a citizen of the U.S. but having been raised here can take on your life: physically, emotionally, psychologically.. etc. At least, in 50 years when Hispanic Immigration is referred to in the history books; when they talk about the discrimination they faced, or the life of constant rebuff they lived, I’ll get to say, “I was there. I experienced that” and that’s better than never having experienced anything at all.
